A professor from the Ripple Research Initiative urges crypto companies to immediately move to quantum technology

A mathematics professor and cryptography expert believes crypto companies should prioritize building defenses against the threat of future quantum attacks.

In a new one interview Along with Ripple, Dr. Massimiliano Sala, a professor at the University of Trento in Italy, warns that future quantum computers could “easily solve fundamental problems for digital signatures,” undermining the security of cryptographic assets.

Sala, head of the Italian Cryptography Association, believes that all classic public key cryptosystems should be replaced with updated versions capable of maintaining security against quantum attacks. He suggests that projects begin moving forward immediately.

“The likelihood of quantum threats materializing may not be imminent, but it is significant enough to warrant proactive measures.”

Sala recognizes that quantum-resistant systems come with tradeoffs, including higher computational demands and larger data sizes for secure transactions. The cryptography expert suggests that blockchain systems first incorporate quantum security elements in less critical areas to avoid compromising the functionality of their networks.

Sala is not the first expert to warn about the dangers of quantum computing. In 2021, a team of researchers from the University of Sussex examined what level of quantum computing power could threaten Bitcoin (Bitcoin) blockchain.

Team leader Mark Webber explained,

“Cutting-edge quantum computers today have only 50-100 qubits. Our estimated requirement is 30 [million] at 300 million physical qubits suggests that Bitcoin should be considered safe from a quantum attack for now, but devices of this size are generally considered feasible and future advances could reduce the requirements further.

A qubit is a quantum bit, the basic unit when performing computation in a quantum system comparable to the ones and zeros of traditional binary computation.
