Nigeria to upskill 1,000 AI and blockchain experts every year
Nigeria has announced a major program to educate 1,000 youth per year on blockchain and artificial intelligence (AI), among other cutting-edge technologies. This project fits into the country’s broader digital transformation agenda.
Vice President Kashim Shettima formally inaugurated the AI Expertise Blockchain and Technology Training and Outsourcing initiative in Jigawa on July 23. The move underscores Nigeria’s commitment to becoming a leader in the technology sector.

Government partnerships and financial support
The Nigerian government has partnered with technology company Gluwa to realize this ambitious training initiative. This partnership aims to provide Nigerians with training in artificial intelligence, blockchain, and other technologies.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu also announced a financial grant of 150,000 Nigerian naira ($90) to help micro, small and medium enterprises. This money is expected to help the nation create a robust fintech environment.
Vice President Shettima stressed that Nigeria is not only catching up, but is poised to overtake other global economies. The effort is aimed at generating a global workforce that will drive future innovation.
Focus on national digital transformation
Shettima stressed that the project would be welcomed by all to create a network of technology centers. These centers will help the Nigerian economy thrive for decades to come.
The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) unveiled plans earlier this month to establish research centers that emphasize emerging new technologies. These facilities will be spread across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.
NITDA Director General Kashifu Inuwa stressed the agency’s goal of creating a robust technology research ecosystem. This program is expected to greatly enhance Nigeria’s capacity to develop technology.
The areas of study envisaged will be essential ones, such as additive manufacturing, artificial intelligence, robotics, blockchain technology, the Internet of Things (IoT) and unmanned aerial vehicles.
Inuwa revealed the creation of a special vehicle to oversee these important sectors and ensure effective implementation of research facilities. This move is expected to boost Nigerian economic development and creativity.
Nigeria’s latest plan to train citizens in modern technologies is a major step toward digital transformation. The country intends to strengthen its technology workforce and research ecosystem through strategic partnerships and financial support. This move positions Nigeria as a leader in the technology sector, fostering innovation and economic prosperity.
