(Kitco News) – US presidential candidate Robert Kennedy Jr. wants to bring blockchain transparency to the US budget, telling crowds of his supporters at a rally in Michigan on Sunday that doing so would allow every American to watch “every budget item whenever they want, 24 hours a day.”

“We will have 300 million eyes on our budget, and if someone spends $16,000 on a toilet seat, everyone will know,” Kennedy said during his campaign speech.

According to the presidential candidate, putting the budget on a public blockchain would allow for greater transparency and accountability, giving taxpayers the ability to closely monitor where their tax money is spent.

The idea of widespread citizen involvement and control has caught the attention of many and, unsurprisingly, the proposal has sparked divided opinion. Supporters applauded the move, saying it is a significant step toward true transparency.

“Transparent public accounting may be the best use case for blockchain technology beyond supply chain,” another X user he wrote. “The checks and balances in our government don’t work if the various branches are involved in corruption together (president and congress in particular), it’s time the people held them accountable.”

Critics, on the other hand, have raised concerns about the practicality of implementing blockchain technology on a large scale as it is known to suffer from significant limitations in handling complex real-world data.

Others called in taking the idea one step further by using blockchain for real-time voting.

Kennedy, who is running as an independent candidate, has been a strong supporter of Bitcoin and blockchain for several years and has personally supported major cryptocurrencies and blockchain’s ability to decentralize the financial system and provide individuals with a form of money free from bank manipulation central.

He was also the first presidential candidate to accept Bitcoin for campaign donations and said that if elected president, he would explore the idea of backing the U.S. dollar with Bitcoin.

His unabashed support of the industry has earned him the support of prominent figures in the crypto community, prompting many aspiring politicians to follow suit.
